Witch Crafting Wednesday: The Kitchen Witch: Eating as Ritual for Health and Healing with Morgan Detering

Join us for our new Wednesday Night Series: Witch Crafting Wednesday! This monthly drop-in event is witchy, creative and fun! Each month we will gather and learn about a mystical topic and create a handmade craft together. From crystals, to love potions, manifesting, to dream catchers and more, each gathering is meant to reignite your intuition, bring on the magical vibes, and light your inner creative fire. Come get witchy and crafty with us!

For many of us, food is often perceived as the enemy. We constantly battle what to eat, when to eat and how to eat, finding ourselves disconnected from the pure essence and pleasure of what nourishing our bodies can look like. Following fad diets or listening to what worked for others leads us to neglect what works for us. In this class, Morgan Detering will guide participants to explore how creating mealtime rituals can heal the relationship we have with food, our bodies and ultimately our health. As a group we will prepare a light meal in the context of ceremony and then sit together in circle and enjoy the fruits Mother Nature, and the company of fellow brothers and sisters.

Morgan is a trained Life Coach, Spiritual Guide, and budding Herbalist. Her life long journey of self development and personal growth, as well as her own healing around food, body and Self Love, are some of the many things that brought her to Twin Star. A forever student of life, Morgan deeply cherishes all opportunity’s to share what she has been taught with others, and to hold the space for growth and expansion of all around her.

with Haley Neddermann

July 10th, 2019, 6:30-8:30PM

We hope you will be able to venture out with us during this beautiful and blooming time of the season and meet some of our local plant allies. Herbalist Haley Neddermann will lead us on a summer wild plant walk through downtown New Milford. Bring your medicinal plant guides and magnifying loops if you have them! We will be meeting at the apothecary, and checking out what we have growing in our garden, as well as what medicinal plants can be found downtown. A great way to find out how abundantly our favorite plant allies grow all around us!

As an Herbalist & Flower Essence Practitioner, Haley hopes to inspire people to connect with the plants that grow around them, and empower them to incorporate those plants into their everyday life. What draws Haley in the most when studying herbal medicine, is learning about the ways plants help us heal on an emotional and spiritual level.

Goldenrod: Ancestral Plant Relationships

Screen Shot 2019-03-28 at 11.02.07 AM.png

with Lupo Passero & Zach Fisher

Our ancestors come in not only human form, but in plant form as well. Human beings and plants beings have been co-evolving together for over 200,000 years. There is a unspoken language between plants and people that our ancestors knew and understood. Deciphering the Language of Plants is an imperative for building and fostering “right” relationships with all living beings. Our ancestors knew each plant and tree intimately and could tell you the story of each species including its medicinal, edible, and utilitarian uses, but more importantly the spiritual and emotional healing virtues as well.

The Ancestral Plant Relationship Series is about re-membering plant medicine in all of its forms and deepening our close and personal understanding of the green world. We will work with a different plant or tree each class and will include and overview and introduction to the medicinal, edible, utilitarian & spiritual uses. We will spend the day thoroughly getting to know each plant as an individual, will make a variety of preparations with the plant and will end the day with Green Breath, a shamanic plant spirit ceremony which offers the participants a chance to journey into with the spirit of the plant.

All participants will make and take home several goldenrod herbal and primitive preparations.

Plant Partner: Mugwort

mugwort.jpg

Presented by Bekah Sutter

Mugwort is said to have derived its name from having been used to flavor beer before the wide use of hops. The botanical name is derived from Artemisia, the Greek goddess of the hunt, fertility, and the forests and hills. Roman soldiers were known to put mugwort in their sandals to keep their feet from getting tired. Native Americans equate mugwort with witchcraft. Join us in learning more about this favorite and locally abundant plant ally!

Sometimes learning about healing herbs can be overwhelming. There are so many plants to meet and learn about! Even in one cup of tea there can be a beautiful synergy of a dozen different herbs, flowers, roots and more!

Fox Walking, Plants Talking: A Nature Awareness Play-Shop

Screen Shot 2019-02-27 at 4.46.53 PM.png

Fox Walking, Plants Talking, Nature Awareness Play Shop with Zach Fisher & Lupo Passero

If you ask any indigenous medicine man or women how they learned about the medicinal uses of the plants, they will tell you that the plants told them.  This type of deep natural instinct is alive in all of us, but many of us have forgotten how to harness that connection.  In this afternoon play shop, we will cover the principles of Instinct and Awareness, how we can use them to enhance our everyday experiences as nature lovers, herbalists and animal enthusiasts. We will discover how to move with nature and let our senses play freely using exercises and games to reawaken our inner dialogue and intuition.  We will collectively work to deepen our awareness and understanding of how animals and plants “speak” to us. There are so many layers to this experience, and a fantastic class for folks of all ages.

Nettle: Ancestral Plant Relationships

nettle flip small.png

with Lupo Passero & Zach Fisher

All participants will make and take home several nettle herbal and primitive preparations.

13 Moons - A Healing Women's Circle: Intuition

intuitionmoon.jpg

This month Cheryl Vanase leads the circle in focusing on intuition.

Join us for this month’s sacred sisterhood moon circle – focusing on intuition. There will be an exploration of the science behind our sixth sense, and an understanding of how tapping into our intuition on a deeper level will help us navigate our life with greater clarity and ease.

When we embrace our intuition as our internal GPS system, we are able to transform ourselves and experiences as Empowered, Awakened Women. We will learn how to work with the Moon as a way of understanding more about ourselves and our paths. During a guided experiential meditation, we will work with our intuition in a divine way and practice strengthening our ability to listen to our intuitive inner knowing.

Following the guided meditation, you will be led through a creative + expressive arts exercise paired with a New Moon ritual – that will reveal deep truths and new directions for your soul.

Since the dawn of our existence women have been gathering together as daughters, sisters, mothers and as healers. Powerful stories have been shared, tears have been shed and many magical moments of healing, strength and love have occurred. It is in honor of this ancient tradition that the 13 Moons - A Women’s Healing Circle has been created. Beginning in January, each month meeting on the first Thursday (Jan & July the second Thursday), we will explore a variety of topics including: sacred healing, women’s plant allies and the wise woman tradition. We will create rituals for honoring our many phases and explore our role as women, sisters and community healers. The circle will be a private and sacred group, open and inclusive to all who identify as women.

This month’s sisterhood circle is being facilitated by moon sister Cheryl Vanase. Cheryl is a Licensed Holistic Psychotherapist and Spiritual Life Coach, who has 15 years of experience in healing, holistic mental health, and the study of authenticity + consciousness.

The Nitty Gritty on Pricing.....
CASH OR CHECK ONLY PLEASE!
PLANTS ARE $5 EACH. BUY 8 PLANTS, GET ONE FREE! This price includes the sales tax. Yes, seedling are taxable in CT.

Also, bring in 30 recycled plastic pots and get ONE PLANT FREE.
POTS MUST BE: small 3", 4", or 5" SQUARE POTS in decent condition. No oversized honkers please. I will also take back 3", 4", or 5" round pots, but they don't count towards a free plant. Sorry, but roundies make greenhouse life harder. UPDATE: I WILL take back flimsy 4 and 6 pack plastic planters. But they must be gently used, clean-ish and nicely stacked. PLEASE don't ease your trash guilt by bringing me torn or crumpled ones that I can't re-use next year and will have to throw away. These also don't count towards a free plant, but in the spirit of recycling I will re-use them!

Some thoughts on pricing:
Yes, it sometimes feels as if organic costs more. But the reality is, non-organic foods and plants actually cost us all more in the long run, in poisoned air, water, soils, plants and bodies. Environmental and social externalities (a side effect or consequence of an industrial or commercial activity that affects other parties without this being reflected in the cost of the goods or services involved) may be hard to factor in, but it doesn't make them any less real. When I might cringe at the slightly higher cost of organic at the cash-register, I think to myself: "If not me, who? If not now, when?". High quality seeds, potting soil and making efforts to limit waste takes additional time, effort and money. But you are worth it, the plants are worth it, our friends and family and communities are worth it, Mother Earth is worth it.

Perhaps you are like me, with a high deductible "health insurance plan"? Perhaps like me, you have to pay $4000 (or more!) out of pocket, on top of monthly premiums, before your "health insurance" kicks in? Americans pay 25% more for health care than any other country. Overall, Americans also pay less for their food than anytime in history, and less for their food than almost any other country in the world. Perhaps we all would be better off paying more for high quality food and less for "sick care"?!?

And randomly:
This year as we run out of recycled pots, we are trying out coconut coir pots which are a by-product and are compostable. I welcome your feedback on how they worked out for you.
The Nitty Gritty....
You are strongly encouraged to bring a cardboard box or flat to travel home with your new friends. Pleasant Valley Botanicals is pro-recycling, and you will see a hodgepodge of plant containers since we are pro-recycling!
The above plant list is for informational purposes only, and not a guarantee of the availability of any specific plant. There are also a few friends that are not yet ready to come out of the greenhouse. Sign up for the mailing list if you might be interested in an end of summer perennial plant sale.
Any previous Pleasant Valley Botanicals CSA member receives one free seedling (your choice) just for stopping by- no purchase necessary.
All our plants are grown with love and our seeds are from sources that have taken the safe-seed pledge or are otherwise reliable (*). However, if harvesting for culinary or medicinal purposes it is still YOUR responsibility to ensure proper identification as other adventurous seeds and weed seeds CAN and DO make their way into potting soil, neighboring seedling flats and pots, and garden beds (**). Any information presented here or during the sale is not intended to diagnosis, prevent, cure or treat any medical condition nor make any medical claims about the safety or efficacy of herbs.
For more information or questions, you can email thru the contacts page or ask to be put on Pleasant Valley Botanicals' email list.

A Feng Shui Garden with Medicinal Plants

Screen Shot 2019-02-28 at 2.12.55 PM.png

Plant Wisdom Wednesday: A Feng Shui Garden with Medicinal Plants with Rose Garbien

Learn to design a medicinal garden using an ancient Feng Shui Bagua Map. The practice of Feng Shui goes back about 4,000 years. It is about the energy, the chi, in our enviroment, what is closest to us has the most effect on us. The map, or Bagua, has 9 different areas of our lives. Each one is associated with a color,  shape, body part and family member, just to name a few. Students will learn which areas of the Bagua which are associated with the different body parts and which plants work best in each area. No previous gardening experience is necessary. Students will receive a Lavender plant to take home with the intention that it will be prosperous and bring them the much wealth!

Rose Garbien used to think Feng Shui was just moving furniture around, but in 2017 she was introduced to BTB Feng Shui and was hooked!  Rose is a certified Feng Shui consultant with Karen Rauch Carter, Inspired Feng Shui. She has studied the IChing with Barry Gordan, and is also certified with Laura Morris and Anjie Cho of the Mindful Design BTB Feng Shui School. In 1997 she studied with Gail Ulrich of Blazing Star Herbal School, Shelburn Falls Ma., Medicinal Herbalism, Intensive Program. She resides in Roxbury, CT with her husband of 33 years and son.

Heart of Pachamama: Shamanic Journeying Class Series

deana2.png

with Deana Paqua of Embody the Sacred

In this series, we will work with the contemporary practice of Shamanic Journeying, a meditative practice to the beat of the drum, where we will deepen our relationship with the Heart of Pachamama/Mother Earth. We will also learn traditional mystical teachings of the Andes, where we will learn about the Seven Layers of Pachamama. We will safely explore these energetic layers of our beautiful Mother Earth, learn how to work with them in our everyday lives and healing practices, and strengthen our connection and appreciation of Pachamama's abundant gifts. We will also learn about gemstones, essences and plant allies that can assist us in understanding these beautiful teachings.

We will also cover how to journey safely in sacred space, incorporating energy clearing and protection techniques along with some basic practices from the indigenous healers and mystics of the Andes.

This is an introductory and foundational course for beginners and more practiced students to learn techniques for their own personal use. It's best if students have some basic shamanic journeying experience. This course; however, is not training to become a “Shaman.” A Shaman is a medicine person who hails from specific tribes in Siberia, Mongolia and a few other places across the globe who has been given this title of honor by their community, and practices their healing work in specific ways by going into trance and embodying the spirit of one of their ancestors. The teachings we will be learning are from contemporary Shamanic practices and from the Andes, directly from Don Mariano Quispe Flores of the Q'ero tribe. Don Mariano is a Priest, Healer and Mystic, known as a Paco, and as an elder with over 45 years' experience, he is also known as a Kuraq Aqullak. Though the Q'ero are frequently referred to as Shamans, technically they are not, as their practices differ from traditional Shamans but are equally beautiful, potent and life-changing.

These earth-honoring, spiritual practices are open to all of us as we honor indigenous cultures by respecting their specific titles and traditions, and sharing the traditional teachings that we have been given permission to share. In this way, we work with integrity and learn to connect to our own experiences of the Divine and deepen our connections to each other, our Ancestors, the Heavens and the Earth.

Dates: May 14 & 21, June 4 & 18, 6:30-9pm

To register, contact Deana Paqua at deana.paqua@gmail.com, or 203-994-5045. Cost is $227 for this program including materials. Discount available for current Twin Star Students and Shamanic Practitioner Program (through Embody the Sacred), $197.

13 Moons - A Healing Women's Circle: Flower Moon in Full Bloom

flowermoon.jpg

This month Haley Neddermann leads the circle in honor of the Full Flower Moon.

Come celebrate the bursting buds of springtime during our May circle! Together we will craft and adorn ourselves with flower crowns and wreaths, listen to goddess stories associated with some of our favorite flowers, and sing songs to greet the spring and summer blooms.

Haley has been taking classes at Twin Star since 2014, completing trainings that include Foundations of Herbalism, Practices and Protocols of Herbalism, Flower Essence Practitioner Training in Costa Rica, and the Seed to Market Advanced Herbal Training. Before coming to Twin Star, she completed her bachelor's degree in Natural History and Environmental Humanities at Sterling College (VT), so her knowledge of plants also extends to their ecological roles and stories. Nicole has been studying energetic healing and alternative medicine for over 7 years. She first began her journey in the field when introduced to holistic health studies at Western Connecticut State University. She proceeded to study energetic healing, different types of cultural healing, and alternative healing for the mind body and spirit. During this journey she became fascinated by the healing modalities of crystals. She began to teach herself all there is to know about crystals and their healing properties. WILLOW :: ANCESTRAL PLANT RELATIONSHIPS

Screen Shot 2019-02-27 at 4.05.22 PM.png

with Lupo Passero & Zach Fisher

We will spend the day thoroughly getting to know each plant as an individual, will make a variety of preparations with the plant and will end the day with Green Breath, or another profound plant spirit ceremony which offers the participants a chance to journey into with the spirit of the plant.

All participants will make and take home several willow herbal and primitive preparations.

THIS CLASS HAS BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

Introduction to Herbal Soap Making

Screen Shot 2019-02-28 at 2.13.10 PM.png

Plant Wisdom Wednesday: Intro to Herbal Soap Making with Becky Sterling

Have you always wanted to learn how to make soap? What better way than to learn how to make it naturally and how to incorporate herbs as well! Join us as local herbalist and soap maker Becky Sterling demystifies the soap making process as we make a batch together! You will learn soap making basics from safety, tools and supplies to use and avoid, to learning how to turn that basic bar of soap into an herbal soap by using plants to help heal the skin. You will leave with handouts that will include a resource guide & soap recipe, a free mini bar of natural soap, and a new life skill!

Becky has led an ‘alternative health’ lifestyle for over 15 years and has been studying herbalism specifically for the last 5 years. She has always been drawn down the less traveled roads and loves finding the off-the-beaten-path ways of incorporating herbs, health, and happiness into her life. Her business, Second Sight, is so named because it took a lifetime of circumstances, as well as mental alignment, and even actual vision impairment for her to see what her path is supposed to be. It is one of herbalism, creativity, and sharing her know-how.

Screen Shot 2019-03-29 at 1.17.14 PM.png

This month Bekah Sutter leads the circle in Dream Work

Join us for this month’s sacred sisterhood moon circle – focusing on the power of our dreams. In this circle we will explore how we can work our unconscious dream world to manifest and create in the waking world. We will discuss symbolism and how we might decode what our dream selves are trying to communicate. In circle we delve into some tools and practices we may use to enhance these experiences. Gather with us under the fiery Aries new moon and get dreamy with us!

EARTH'S RISING SONS - An Initiation for Men led by Women

Screen Shot 2019-03-14 at 9.15.10 AM.png

An Initiation for Men led by Women - 7 Weekends over 7 Months - Brattleboro, VT

This seven month initiation, is being lead by and held by women who have been on the GodDESS path as priestesses, medicine women, healers, and teachers.  We will be sharing with you, from the feminine perspective and view, the ways in which we see the masculine. This is not a training on how to be more feminine..this is about having an opportunity to be in circle, with women who have gone deep into the feminine teachings, so that you can experience the depth of who we are, to better identify yourself.

This group will meet for seven weekends. This is a commitment. To show up for yourself, for our world, for Her. We want to work with men who are ready- To both listen, and speak, and share,
And to rise out of the old construct of what defines masculinity into a new form. In nature, masculine is on the outside, it holds, supports, and acts. The feminine is in the inside, in the center. Our mission is to restore our nature, and make right where we have gone wrong. The Patriarchy has placed the masculine into a dominant position. This has hurt both men and women. It's time to heal, and to return.

Through ceremony, prayer, sacred space, and ritual, we will enter into the temple of the Goddess together, to remember what has been forgotten-
We are all Her children.
We walk upon Her together.
And She is calling us home.
She is calling Her sons,
To stand strong in who they are,
And to stand up for Her.
She is calling Her warriors,
To serve what needs to be served-
Humanity, truth, justice, and love.

13 Moons Women's Healing Circle

Screen Shot 2019-01-02 at 12.55.32 PM.png

This month Haley Neddermann leads the circle in "Eye Gazing - Soul Vision"

The simple yet powerful practice of eye gazing (also called 'soul vision') is a way for us to experience being without the attachments of ego, and create true connection with others. During our moon circle, we will have the chance to practice this cathartic ritual with two different partners, giving us the opportunity to compare and contrast our experiences. Together we will explore what mirrors we can be for each other, and what stories we are able to access across space and time. Each 'round' lasts 10 - 15 minutes, and is guided by verbal cues. My hope is that we will have a chance to share with our partners and with the entire circle our different experiences.
