What is a Foundational Herbal Education
What does it mean to have a foundational herbal education, let alone an herbal education? First, we have to look at education as a whole. We live in a society that follows a standardized educational structure. In this educational structure, there are usually 2-4 years of formal study, and then a certificate of completion is received. When we talk about herbal education we are discussing a topic that is not completely standardized. Herbalism doesnβt necessarily hold a focus on following one specific pathway toward certification. Herbalism is made up of a number of different threads influenced by history, culture, and both internal and external environments.
The Origins of Astro-Herbalism
Astrology, astronomy, and herbalism were once woven together as a single sacred science of observation and healing. The earliest sky watchers were also healers, herbalists, and farmers. Their study of the heavens was not separate from daily life but interlaced with medicine, agriculture, and ritual. Before these arts were divided into categories of science and spirit, they existed as one. To know the movement of the planets was to know when to plant seeds, prepare remedies, harvest, or tend to illness. For the herbalist today, remembering this origin restores a holistic way of seeing that unites body and cosmos, plant and planet, earth and sky. By tracing our practice back to these roots, we return to a lineage where every remedy was a living bridge between the celestial and terrestrial worlds.
